Evelyn Louise Cawelti

Camarillo, CA

April 16, 1928 - July 30, 2018

Evelyn Louise Cawelti was born in Des Moines, Iowa on April 16th, 1928. She passed away in her home in Camarillo, California on July 30, 2018 surrounded by her family.

Evelyn was born, the second child, to Lora and Claude Bond of Iowa. She fondly remembered living on the farm and the lifestyle that she experienced in the Midwest. She often recalled the home gatherings after church that included dinner and homemade ice cream. Her family left Iowa in December 1936 to move to Pomona, California where they rented a one bedroom house and would move to Los Angeles one year later.

In 1948, Evelyn met the love of her life, Ralph Cawelti, a third generation Camarillian, whom she would marry 8 months later on October 10th. They lived in Los Angeles, but moved to Camarillo in 1954 where they raised a beautiful family. Evelyn took pride in being a homemaker and raising their family of four, while Ralph owned and operated a Mobil Service Station. She was involved in P.E.O., PTA, and was named "Mother of the Year" in 1966. She was also a leader of various church groups, and even won a car for selling magazines! The Caweltis opened up their home in 1959 to start Camarillo Christian Church and watched as God nurtured it with His guidance.

Upon retirement, Evelyn and Ralph spent the next 20 years ballroom dancing, camping, and playing with their grandkids and great grandkids. In 2001, Evelyn and Ralph were honored as "Don and Dona" of Camarillo by the Pleasant Valley Historical Society.

After Ralph's passing in 2007, Evelyn continued to be active and pursue her hobbies. Whenever Evelyn was asked, "How are you?" her reply would always be "I'm blessed", and blessed she was! Evelyn brought so much joy and light to the community and people around her. She was a shining example of a Christian woman sharing her wisdom and faith with many young ladies at church and caregivers at home.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Kathy Cawelti; daughters, Ruth Ann Basham and Susan Huebner; daughter and son-in-law; Jennifer and Ken Conger; grandchildren, Beth Cawelti, Lora Cawelti and Armin Chamanara, Jennifer Cawelti and Victor Negri, Sarah Cawelti and Daniel Sokolow, Jamie Cawelti, Devon and Bri Basham, Paige Basham, Dylan Basham, Brian Huebner, Anna Huebner; and 5 great grandchildren.

Join us for a Time of Reflection on Friday, August 3 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Griffin Family Funeral Chapels, 1075 E.
