Bruce served in the United States Navy for 3 years. Of that, he served 22 months as a plane captain aboard an aircraft carrier assigned to an anti-submarine squadron in the Korean conflict.

After military service, Bruce was a surveyor for L.A. County. He then joined the Downey Fire Department and subsequently the L.A. County Fire Department where he served for 20 years.
