James Joseph “Jim” Purcell

Camarillo, CA

James “Jim” Purcell of Camarillo passed away on July 11, 2017.  Jim was born in Dublin, Ireland on September 24, 1931. He and his siblings immigrated to the U.S. in 1953 and soon he enlisted in the US Army, stationed in Fort Benning George, where he served in a tank unit with the 1st Armored Division. Jim’s time in the army was a proud event for him and helped him to become a US Citizen. He would frequently recall and tell stories of his service.

Jim met the love of his life, his “Irish Angel”, at an Irish-American club in Los Angeles in 1961.  They soon fell in love and married in 1962.  He and his family moved to Camarillo, CA in 1976. Jim was a pioneer in the computer and copier industry working for Xerox Corporation in El Segundo, CA. He worked on special projects at Jet Propulsion Laboratories (NASA) where he was temporarily assigned to the Voyager 1 project and helped to develop today’s modern LED lighting and micro switches. Upon retiring in 1986, Jim began his second career in rental property management in the Ventura area and fully retired in 2006.

He is survived by his wife Anne; son John; daughter-in-law Tricia; granddaughter Brenna; his brother Leo; and his sisters Angela and Josephine.  He was a devoted husband, loving father and proud papa.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 24 at Griffin Family Funeral Chapels, 1075 E. Daily Dr., Camarillo.
