Josephine E. Riedemann Baumgartner

Camarillo, CA

Josephine "Jo" Baumgartner, 88, of Camarillo passed away peacefully with her family by her side on July 13, 2017.

Jo was born in 1929, in New York, the middle child of John and Maude Beiner. She attended Jamaica High School where she lettered in several sports. Her first job was as a secretary at J.C. Penney in Manhattan and, in addition, was asked to be a fit model for wedding dresses. Jo took pleasure in recounting how she and other employees received Christmas bonuses from Mr. Penney himself.

In 1947, Jo met her future husband, Bill Riedemann on a blind date. They married two years later and settled in Farmingdale, Long Island where they raised their three children. Jo was very active in her community. She volunteered for the PTA and the Board of Elections. She took great pride participating in the Jonas Salk polio cube vaccination program in local schools, as well as her work at the School for the Deaf in Rockville Centre.

Jo and Bill loved hosting and participating in large family gatherings.

In 1974, Jo and Bill moved their family to Camarillo, California. She worked for four years at St. John's Seminary as secretary for the Dean of Academic Affairs. After the death of her husband, Bill in 1981, she went to work at St. John's Hospital as a secretary in the pain management department.

In 1987, she married Fred Baumgartner. Jo remained a tireless volunteer in helping establish Padre Serra Parish in Camarillo. She was also active as a Eucharistic Minister and taught second grade religious education classes. Jo's family was the center of her life and she will always be remembered as a loving, caring and giving person.

Jo is survived by her three children: Joanne Hayes (Pat), Janet Sandifer, Bill Riedemann (Kathy); grandchildren, Michael and Jeffrey Sandifer and Shawn Riedemann; great grandchildren, Abigail, Jameson and Ezekiel Sandifer; and her brother John Beiner.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 20 at Padre Serra Parish, 5205 Upland Rd, Camarillo. Burial will follow at Santa Clara Cemetery in Oxnard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association (
