Robert L. "Bob" Compton

Camarillo, CA

Robert “Bob” Compton passed away at his home surrounded by family on July 4, 2017, at the age of 85. Born in Corvallis, Oregon on September 29, 1931, Robert arrived in Ventura County in 1953 to work for Shell Oil as a mechanical engineer, following his graduation from Oregon State College (BME 1953) Phi Beta Kappa. Ventura County became his home. And on September 12, 1953, Ellen M. Sika, the love of his life, became his wife. The U.S. Air Force then displaced job and wife, but he was released to both upon his honorable discharge as a first lieutenant after a tour of duty that deployed to Korea and ended in Okinawa.

Robert wanted to be an attorney and despite his mother’s concerns about the respectability of the profession, obtained his law degree from Boalt Hall School of Law (LLB 1961). After service as an U.S. Assistant Attorney, Robert was hired as an associate attorney by a small law firm with linoleum tile covered floors in Oxnard. Clients were likely to have field mud on their boots and the linoleum made clean up easy. That law firm became known as Nordman, Cormany, Hair, and Compton. Robert was a founding partner. The firm grew with Ventura County and, by the time it ceased to exist, had been home at one time to many distinguished members of the bench and bar.

Robert had a rich life outside of the law. Commodore (1972) and life long member of the Ventura Yacht Club, he loved the sea. He had an outdoorsman’s passion for game and fish. He was a member of many civic and charitable organizations.

Robert is survived by his wife Ellen, their three children Gary, Mark, and Ann; grandchildren Lynn, Marian, Bruce, Sarah, Tristan, Morgan, Alec, and Brynne; and great grandchildren Oliver and Alastair.

Friends are invited to a service to be held on July 12, 2017 at 10:00 a.m., at St. Mary Magdalen Chapel, 2532 Ventura Blvd., Camarillo.

A celebration of his life will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to RAIN Communities, Inc., P.O. Box 1934, Camarillo, CA 93011.
