George Billings Baird, age 87, died of natural causes on June 1, 2017, in Thousand Oaks, California. George was born in Utah November 19, 1929, to Hyrum and Florence Baird and was the second to the youngest of nine children. George was raised in Utah and graduated from the University of Utah. As a young man he moved to Colorado where he met his future wife Mary Ellen Randall. They were married for thirty-eight years and had three sons. After getting married, George completed a Master's Degree in Engineering from USC and worked as a rocket scientist for Rocketdyne for many years. His accomplishments included Chief Project Engineer designing propulsion systems for the Space Shuttle, Atlas, Saturn, Apollo and the National Aerospace Plane. He loved his work and his family and all of the many adventures they had together.

George was a devoted husband, father, volunteer and friend to so many people in Ventura County. As a dedicated Boy Scout leader, George was so proud to see his three sons and four grandsons achieve the Boy Scouts of America's highest rank of Eagle Scout. After a rewarding career and retiring from Rocketdyne, George enjoyed volunteering and helping others. His favorite volunteer jobs include his eight year role as volunteer officer for the Ventura County Sheriff's Department, working with Senior Concern and The Goebel Senior Center. He made many friends during this time and continued to travel with his friends and family. George was always ready for the next adventure. His family will always remember the fun family trips that included hiking, camping, snow-skiing, fishing and house-boating on Lake Powell.

George is preceded in death by his son John, his first wife Mary Ellen, his parents, eight siblings and his second wife Veronica Richardson. George has been very blessed by the devoted companionship and love of his girlfriend, Bea McConnell. George is survived by his sons Mark and Kevin, their spouses and his 4 grand-children. He was loved dearly by his family and will be deeply missed by all family and friends.

George enjoyed the good life and making so many new friends while living at The Reserve in Thousand Oaks for the past seven years. His family is grateful to all of the staff for creating such a welcoming place for George to live it up during his last years.
